A delegation from the Ghana Institute of Horticulturists (GIH) has called on the Vice Chancellor to discuss the role of the institute in the development of the horticulture industry in Ghana.
Mr. Patrick Kumah, president of the GIH and a lecturer at the CANR, KNUST, introduced the delegation comprising some executive members of the institution and a Canadian delegation from the Agricultural Institute of Canada. He then spoke briefly on the purpose of the visit.
The Pro- Vice Chancellor, Prof. W.O. Ellis, speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, said that the University is making efforts towards establishing more relationships with other institutions to share experiences for mutual benefits. He commented on the need and importance for the collaborative efforts in working together as institutions. Prof Ellis added that the University administration has been supportive to the initiative. He commended the efforts of the stakeholders and said that it was a good initiative.
Mr. Kumah expressed gratitude on behalf of the delegation for the encouragement by the Pro-Vice Chancellor.
The Secretary of the Institute, Mr. Francis Appiah, speaking on the role of the GIH, said that they were working hard to bridge the gap between the academia and the industry. He added that the body is made up of individual scientists from research institutions, universities, food related NGOs, horticulture institutions, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), among others.
In an interview, Mr. Tom Beach, the leader of the Canadian delegation spoke on the role of the Agricultural Institute of Canada in the development of related institutions and possible measures put in place to enhance the food industry. He also entreated students to mostly participate in these network chapters being put in place to help curb negativities in the food and agricultural industry.
